In a spacious company building in Bourgeon Jallieu, not far from Lyon, there is a long white table; the dazzling light from the fluorescent tubes above illuminates around 20 workstations. They are staffed exclusively by women. A kind of solid cushion is positioned in front of each one, which the skilled worker covers with fabric and decorates with an Hermès bandarole. Tilted slightly forward and attached to a pedestal, it represents an important utensil in these women’s everyday lives. They attach the elegant Hermès squares to it and give them the finishing touches. The special thing about the silk scarves from the French luxury brand is the hem. This is rolled inwards onto the front and stapled with loose thread. This technique is called roullotage. It takes two years for the workers to master them. It looks skillful and effortless when they work on the cloths. A self-experiment shows how demanding the roullotage actually is, but more on that later.
