On a date that was recorded in the history of the media, today is Radio Day. It arose in commemoration of the birth of this mass medium, when on August 27, 1920, a group of young radio amateurs led by Enrique Susini achieved a transmission that marked a before and after in the way people connected with the world. What happened and what gave rise to the Radio.

Although radio waves had already been explored at the end of the 19th century, it was the night of August 27, 1920 that transformed radio into a means of mass communication. Enrique Susini, together with César Guerrico, Luis Romero Carranza and Miguel Mujica, known as “the crazy people on the roof”, carried out the first large-scale radio broadcast from the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires.

The transmission consisted of the opera “Parsifal” directed by Felix von Weingarten. With a few words, Susini presented the first radio broadcast to the public: «Ladies and gentlemen, the Argentine Radio Society presents to you today the sacred festival of Ricardo Wagner, Parsifal». Not knowing if it would work, radio amateurs declared a new era inaugurated and a medium that would become massive. Although the estimated audience was around 50 listeners, this milestone marked a revolutionary stage in communication.

Radio became the main means of communication for decades, uniting people through music, news, theater, fiction, entertainment programs and more.. Although it faced changes and transformations with the advent of television and the digital age, radio continues to be an important voice in people’s lives, maintaining its prestige, relevance, and sustaining a loyal audience.

Enrique Susini and his team of pioneers not only changed the way information was communicated, but also left a lasting legacy in media history. In addition to his role in radio, Susini became a renowned film director, demonstrating his impact in multiple fields.
