Why Leaving Fall Leaves in Your Yard is Better for the Environment and Your Garden

With fall well underway, most people with a yard will want to get rid of the leaves that fall there, but American environmental experts advise otherwise.

Collecting leaves in bags to be sent to the landfill “is by far the worst idea,” David Mizejewski, a naturalist with the U.S. National Wildlife Federation, told the Washington Post.

“What happens when they are buried in the landfill is that they decompose in anaerobic conditions, without oxygen, and produce methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas,” he said. he adds.

In addition, a good layer of leaves on the ground would be essential for the survival and development of the fauna and flora which enrich the soil.

This would also be the case for pollinating insects, such as bees. “It allows them to survive the winter and emerge to pollinate your garden [au printemps] and help control other nuisances,” said Scott Black, director of the Xerces Society, a non-profit invertebrate protection organization.

“They fall around the roots of plants where they [empêche les mauvaises herbes de pousser]retain soil moisture and serve as compost,” Mr. Mizjewski told the Washington Post.
