Nevada’s sprawling 2nd Congressional District is traditionally a safe haven for Republicans, but a volatile mix of inflation, Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings, and a deeply controversial GOP nominee have turned the high-desert race into an unexpected national bellwether for Democratic strength in November.
The Improbable Bellwether of the Great Basin
The high desert rarely signals national political tides.
Nevada’s 2nd District has sent just four lawmakers to Washington since its creation more than 40 years ago. Every single one of them has been a Republican. The district covers northern Nevada, leaning overwhelmingly white and rural. During the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump carried the region with a decisive 56% to 42% margin over Kamala Harris, with only Washoe County—anchored by Reno—keeping margins close. In other pockets of the district, Trump won by 50 percentage points or more.
Yet local resentment toward southern Nevada, where the current Republican nominee recently lived, combined with inflation and a sagging presidential approval rating, has opened a door for Democrats. For the first time, the seat is not viewed as a guaranteed Republican lock.
A Retirement and a Controversial Import
The race was blown wide open when Republican Representative Mark Amodei announced his retirement in February after holding the seat for 15 years. Following Amodei’s surprise exit, David Flippo seized the opportunity. A 63-year-old Air Force veteran and Trump stalwart, Flippo relocated north from Las Vegas after losing a 2024 Republican primary in the state’s 4th Congressional District.
Flippo bypassed establishment favorite James Settelmeyer, a former state Senate minority leader, by running a fiercely negative primary campaign backed by MAGA celebrities. The bitter primary tactics alienated local party heavyweights. Following the primary, Amodei pulled his support entirely, declaring on the program “Nevada Newsmakers” that he would not endorse Flippo, describing the campaign as scurrilous against one of the nicest guys around.
Beyond his brief residency in the district, Flippo’s financial disclosures have drawn sharp scrutiny. According to reports from the Washington news outlet NOTUS, Flippo has pumped more than $1.6 million of his own money into the campaign while failing to file mandatory personal financial disclosure information. NOTUS also revealed that Flippo was previously fired from a financial services industry job over alleged policy and regulatory violations.
The Democratic Counter-Strategy and National Stakes
Standing opposite Flippo is Teresa Benitez-Thompson, a 48-year-old Reno resident, former state Assembly member, and relatively moderate Democrat. Her local roots and moderate positioning have energized Democratic hopes in a territory historically hostile to the party.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has added Nevada’s 2nd District to its official target list for the first time in decades. A victory on this rugged, conservative terrain would signal a massive national shift, pointing toward a projected Democratic pickup of 30 or more seats nationwide—far eclipsing the net gain of three seats required to flip control of the House of Representatives.
As campaigns enter the final stretch toward November, voters in the Great Basin find themselves at the center of an experiment that will determine whether local grievances and candidate baggage can override decades of entrenched partisan loyalty.
