Why should Toyota recall Tundra trucks from 2022 to 2023?

The new 2022 through 2023 Toyota Tundra pickup is due for recall, due to a tonneau cover that can detach from the bed while the pickup is in motion.

The recall affects about 130,000 Tundras

If the bed cover were to come off while the truck is moving, the flying tonneau cover could pose a hazard to other vehicles, drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Toyota did not say if it knew of any accidents or injuries related to the defect, and NHTSA had not yet updated its site to reflect the recall.

Toyota advised owners of Tundra trucks with the optional Genuine Toyota tonneau cover to remove the tonneau cover until a repair can be made.

Owners will be notified by mail at the end of March of the remedy. It will be covered by the warranty.

In a separate recall last week, Toyota recalled nearly 9,000 Tundras for a software bug that causes the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to go blank. It can be remedied with a software update performed at a Toyota dealer before April 17.

Tundra haunts Toyota’s dependable vehicle reign

Redesigned for the 2022 model year with new technology upgrades and available hybrid powertrains, the Toyota Tundra has been recalled six times for mostly minor issues except for an axle that can separate from the rear axle.

The Toyota Tundra is a pickup truck manufactured in the United States by the Japanese manufacturer since May 1999.

The Tundra was the second full-size truck to be built by a Japanese manufacturer, the first being the Toyota T100, but the Tundra was the first full-size truck by a Japanese manufacturer to be built in North America.

Initially built at a new Toyota plant in Princeton, Indiana, production was consolidated in 2008 at Toyota’s San Antonio, Texas factory, and is the only full-size pickup truck made in Texas.
