why the government is considering more targeted aid

Ugly 18 cents per liter of fuel is a breath of fresh air for the car drivers. But the measure ends on July 31. What will it be replaced by? Here is the track envisaged by the government.

What has the government announced?

A possible evolution of the discount of 18 cents per liter of fuel. This measure, which came into force on April 1, lasts until July 31. It currently makes it possible to bring the liter of diesel to €1.87 on average. And that of unleaded 95-E10 at €1.74.

What’s the problem ?

The negative aspect is the uniformity of measurement, observes Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy, on France Info. Everyone benefits, even motorists who have very high incomes or who do not use their vehicle to go to work. It would be fairer and more effective if the discount benefited more people who travel 150 kilometers a day, or even more, for their activity: nurses for example. But the general discount of 18 cents is above all very costly for the State: three to four billion euros.

What is envisaged?

More meaningful and more targeted aid,” answers Bruno Le Maire. In other words, subject to resources and professional use of the vehicle. Such a measure had been considered in mid-March. It had not been retained because of its complexity. Since then, the ministry’s services have carried out technical work to cross-check data on income, vehicles, mileage, etc. The alternative solution, on which the Prime Minister has asked us to work, is therefore achievable today. It could be voted on in July. The form was not specified: tax credit, automatic payment type inflation bonus? In any case, the green light will belong to the next government.
