Wiener Hofmusikkapelle: Austria’s Oldest Musical Institution | Vienna Court Band

2023-08-22 13:50:46

The Wiener Hofmusikkapelle is one of the most important cultural institutions in Austria and one of the oldest musical institutions in Europe. Their beginnings cannot be clearly proven because of the little available source material. In any case, a court chapel existed under Habsburg Albrecht I (1283-1308). On July 7, 1498, Emperor Maximilian I issued an order for the reorganization of the court orchestra. This date is considered to be the hour of birth of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle and the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

Today, the court band, whose task it was once to organize sacred and secular festivals, concentrates on church music with a special focus on Austrian composers.

Important musicians such as Heinrich Isaac, Paul Hofheimer, Johann Joseph Fux, Antonio Salieri, Joseph von Eybler, Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, Franz Schubert and Anton Bruckner were members of the court band. In recent decades, its profile has been significantly shaped by conducting personalities such as Clemens Krauss, Josef Krips, Ferdinand Grossmann, Hans Gillesberger and Riccardo Muti, the first honorary member of the Vienna Court Music Orchestra.

The ensemble of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle consists of:

Members of the Vienna Philharmonic, members of the men’s choir of the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Boys’ Choir of the Choralschola of the Vienna Hofburg Chapel

The Hofmusikkapelle is a department of the Federal Ministry for Art, Culture, Public Service and Sport.

Director: Mag. Jürgen Partaj
Rector of the Hofburg Chapel: MMag. GDR. Peter Shipka
