Mass Evacuations Triggered as Wildfire Rips Through Evia
Emergency services are locked in a fierce containment effort on the island of Evia as a fast-moving wildfire tears through agricultural and brushland near Karystos.
The blaze, which erupted early Wednesday afternoon, has placed local communities on high alert as erratic winds and dense vegetation complicate firefighting operations, triggering multiple evacuation orders and drawing a massive deployment of aerial and ground assets.
Massive Aerial and Ground Deployment Battles the Blaze
According to updates from the Fire Service, the firefighting response has been heavily reinforced to combat the flames across multiple fronts. A total of 60 firefighters are currently operating at the scene, backed by 21 fire engines and three specialized hiking teams from the 20th and 4th Special Units of Forest Operations (EMODE).
The aerial response includes four helicopters and nine aircraft conducting continuous water drops over the more inaccessible areas of the fire front. Local municipal water tankers and heavy machinery mobilized by the Municipality of Karystos and the Region of Central Greece are also on site.
Emergency Alerts Force Residents Along Coastal Escape Routes
Civil protection authorities have utilized the 112 emergency alert system to manage public safety as the situation unfolds. Early in the afternoon, residents and visitors in the wider area received initial warnings to remain vigilant.
As the fire advanced, official evacuation orders were dispatched via the 112 service. The first directive targeted the settlement of Theatroupoli, instructing anyone in the area to evacuate immediately via the coastal road toward Karystos.
Shortly after 3 p.m., a second emergency message sounded for residents in the Osmaes and Erodios areas, directing them to follow the same coastal escape route toward safety.
Frontline Defense Protects Vulnerable Residential Zones
Local reporting indicates that the fire fronts advanced dangerously close to residential zones, temporarily threatening homes. Swift intervention by ground crews and volunteers proved critical in shielding properties and preventing extensive structural damage.
To maintain tactical oversight, the Single Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) is utilizing specialized drones equipped with both optical and thermal cameras to stream real-time operational data from the disaster zone.
High Temperatures and Shifting Winds Test Ground Crews
Authorities have strongly urged citizens to strictly follow instructions issued by public safety officials and to refrain from attempting to return to evacuated properties until an all-clear is officially declared.
