Wildfire smoke drives surge in respiratory infections across Indonesia
As an extended dry period sparks widespread forest and land blazes, Indonesia faces a rapid climb in breathing difficulties, with medical facilities across parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan documenting thousands of new cases lately as air conditions deteriorate.
According to data provided by the Health Ministry to The Jakarta Post, the nation has recorded around 15.6 million cases of acute respiratory infections nationwide since January. This figure marks an increase of about 200,000 cases compared to the same period last year.
Regional Outbreaks and Emergency Protocol in West Kalimantan
Even though the Health Ministry points out that the biggest surges have centered on densely populated Java provinces—implying that wildfire smoke is not the sole driver—medical officials in several fire-hit provinces note significant jumps in respiratory complaints while smog blankets neighborhoods.
Emergency room visits for respiratory infections have surged since July in West Kalimantan, which ranks among the provinces with the most extensive burn scars this year. In response, the local administration has ordered all regional public hospitals (RSUD) and community health centers (Puskesmas) across its 14 regencies and cities to provide 24-hour emergency medical services.
“Poor air quality has caused a spike in cases of respiratory illness,” said Hary Agung Tjahyadi, director of RSUD Dr. Soedarso in Pontianak, the provincial capital.

Dr. Jesse Bracamonte, a Mayo Clinic family medicine physician, notes that smoke can cause anything from eye irritation to respiratory infection, respiratory issues and difficulty breathing, and even place the heart at risk for cardiac strain. Individuals dealing with pre-existing lung conditions like COPD or asthma, alongside people with prior heart problems, face the highest vulnerability.

Regarding poor air quality, Dr. Bracamonte recommends staying indoors if certain levels are high, closing windows as much as possible, and ensuring a central air conditioning system circulates air in the home appropriately. When stepping outside remains unavoidable during periods of hazardous air quality and heightened vulnerability, he advises wearing a respirator to prevent damage to the lungs.
