As Europe’s wildfire emergency eases in parts of France and Spain with thousands of residents returning home, a dangerous new front opens in Greece where gale-force winds drive fierce blazes through coastal resort areas and trigger emergency evacuations.
Relief in Southwestern France as Evacuation Orders Ease
Southwestern France experienced a significant turning point as authorities began allowing about 198,000 people to return home after what may have stood as the country’s largest peacetime evacuation. In the Gironde department, firefighters successfully maintained control of a massive pine forest blaze within its established perimeter west of Bordeaux.
The vast fire had previously burned 420 square kilometers of forest, an area four times the size of Paris. While containment lines held, authorities opted against declaring the blaze fully fixed, keeping communities on the affluent Cap Ferret peninsula evacuated due to the threat of buried hot spots erupting.
Today, the fire is still not fixed.

Lt. Col. Eric Pitault told reporters, noting that ground crews utilized strategic tactical burns overnight to consume combustible vegetation ahead of active sectors across roughly 240 kilometers of fire edges.
Severe Flare-Ups and Animal Toll in Southeastern France
While the Atlantic coast saw respite, conditions worsened sharply in the mountainous southeastern Var department. A fire that had been brought under control three days prior flared up violently on Friday, racing across more than 1,000 hectares in a matter of six hours.
French interior minister Laurent Nunez described the situation in the Var as very serious, noting that fires have affected 119,000 hectares in France so far this year. The sudden resurgence forced the overnight evacuation of nearly 2,500 people, while 1,300 firefighters and aerial units battled to secure defensive lines.
Grohin added that conditions remained very complicated alongside temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius. Beyond human displacement, the ecological toll proved severe. At the South Gironde animal sanctuary near Bordeaux, managers treated deer that escaped the massive blazes only to suffer burns or trauma from collisions with fences and vehicles.
Escalating Crisis and Evacuations Across Greek Resorts
As western Europe gained ground, Europe’s most dangerous front shifted toward Greece, where gale-force winds fanned new blazes and drove walls of fire through rugged terrain near Athens and the island of Crete.
In the Boeotia region northwest of Athens, hundreds of residents and visitors were evacuated from a coastal community aboard coast guard boats and fishing vessels as thick orange smoke blanketed the area. Meanwhile, firefighters battled to protect Porto Germeno, a popular resort on the Gulf of Corinth where flames split into three distinct fronts and destroyed numerous homes.
Stabilization Efforts and Mixed Conditions in Spain
Spain experienced a more stable outlook following the government’s decision to lift its national emergency in central provinces like Madrid and Avila. Regional authorities resumed local control as major blazes that burned more than 70,000 hectares were stabilized.
In neighboring Zamora province, an 11,000-hectare fire improved sufficiently for 14 evacuated towns to reopen and restrictions to be lifted. In Castellon, the Vall d’Uixo fire stabilized on its seventh day after scorching nearly 10,000 hectares, though police launched an arson investigation after discovering two separate ignition points.
Despite these improvements, conditions in northern Spain deteriorated. A new blaze broke out overnight in Leon province, while a second remained active alongside a third evolving favorably. Across the continent, scientists point to underlying climatic pressures, noting that Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, heating at more than twice the global average since the 1980s and leaving parched vegetation primed to burn under successive heatwaves.
