Will Ferrell’s “The Hawk” on Netflix: First Look & Summer Premiere Date

Will Ferrell is trading in his baseball cap for a visor this summer. Netflix has unveiled the first look at “The Hawk,” a recent comedy series starring Ferrell as a washed-up golfing legend attempting a comeback. The streaming giant also announced a summer premiere window for the 10-episode series, promising a hilarious dive into the world of professional golf and one man’s refusal to accept defeat.

The initial teaser offers a glimpse of Ferrell as Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, sporting a vibrant pink golf shirt and a visor emblazoned with his nickname. The voiceover sets the stage: “This summer, a legend returns. An icon. A champion. An American hero.” Hawkins himself chimes in, confirming, “That’s me. I’m him. That’s who they’re talking about. If you were wondering.” The series promises a blend of self-deprecating humor and underdog spirit, as Hawkins battles both his aging body and the skepticism of those around him.

“The Hawk” centers on Lonnie Hawkins, the No. 1 golfer in 2004, now struggling to recapture his former glory. According to the official synopsis, his body is telling him to retire, but his heart insists he has one more major championship left in him. Adding to the drama, his ex-wife and son, Lance – a rising star in the golf world – believe his playing days are over. But Hawkins remains determined to complete golf’s Grand Slam and prove he’s still a contender. The series aims to deliver a compelling story about ambition, family, and the challenges of aging in the spotlight.

A Stellar Cast Joins Ferrell on the Fairway

Ferrell won’t be alone on the course. The cast of “The Hawk” boasts a talented ensemble including Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby. The addition of Wilson is particularly noteworthy, given his brother Owen Wilson’s recent foray into golf-themed comedy with Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” spin-off, “Shrinking.” The diverse cast suggests a broad comedic range and the potential for dynamic character interactions.

Netflix has released additional teasers that further showcase Hawkins’ personality. In one, he’s reminded of “the biggest choke in golf history,” prompting a swift “Don’t bring that up!” In another, a playful nod to LeBron James’ pre-game ritual, Hawkins throws chalk powder in the air, only to immediately choke on it, declaring, “That was not a good idea.” These snippets highlight the series’ self-aware humor and willingness to poke fun at golf’s traditions.

Behind the Scenes of the Netflix Comedy

“The Hawk” is a production of Gloria Sanchez Productions, Will Ferrell’s production company, with Ferrell serving as an executive producer alongside Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor. Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue of T-Street are also executive producers, as are Chris Henchy, Harper Steele, David Gordon Green, and Andrew Guest. The series was initially announced at the Netflix Upfront in 2024, but saw some creative shifts with the departure of Ramy Youssef, Josh Rabinowitz, and Andy Campagna in August 2025 due to creative differences, according to What’s on Netflix.

The series is set to consist of 10 episodes, and while Netflix has confirmed a summer 2026 release, an exact premiere date is still pending. But, reports suggest July 16, 2026, is being eyed as a potential launch date, though Netflix cautions that release dates are subject to change. TV Insider reports that the first look at the characters was revealed with the teaser trailer.
