Will Giannis Antetokounmpo participate in the World Basketball this summer? The suspense remains intact. Announced very uncertain at the end of June, the Greek Freak is today in the group of players destined to represent Greece between August 25 and September 10.

So admittedly, this is the extended group of the Greek selection with no less than 22 players on the list, which means that ten of them will still have to withdraw before arriving at the final group of 12 players. Nevertheless, seeing Giannis Antetokounmpo on this list is a necessarily positive sign regarding a potential participation of the Freak in the World Cup.

This shows that Giannis and his team are considering a reunion for the World Cup, a year after EuroBasket and a year before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Both sides want to give each other a little more time before making a decision, and Antetokounmpo is expected to join the squad for preparation. It remains to be seen when, and especially for how long.

As a reminder, the Greek Freak is coming out of a knee operation, an intervention which had posed a big doubt about his participation in the World Cup. Is he recovered enough to do a good preparation (which starts on Monday July 24) and then defend the colors of Greece against Team USA, New Zealand and Jordan, his three opponents in the group stage?

We will follow his case very closely in the days and weeks to come. Because casually, his participation could change two or three things in this 2023 World Cup…
