Will medical certificates for sports really disappear?
Hello Martin,
Yes, some medical certificates, judged “useless” by the government, are doomed to disappear.
The Minister of Health, François Braun, confirmed this Thursday, May 4 on France Inter: “I’m not asking doctors to work more, I’m asking them to work differently. What is working differently? It’s already no longer doing these useless bureaucratic tasks, certificates that are useless”.
If François Braun gave as an example the case of the document requested by a crèche before re-accepting a baby who has been sick, he had mentioned the case of sports activities in February.
“There are sports practices that absolutely do not require a medical certificate”he assured the press on February 8, without giving the list of sports concerned.
François Braun had undertaken to “clarifier” the rules “before the end of the first half of 2023”.
The site service-public.fr will also set up by the summer a specialized section to bring together all the updated information on requests for medical certificates in nurseries, schools, sports federations, by employers.

This effort on certificates was one of the recommendations of a report on administrative simplification for attending physicians, submitted to the Minister on Wednesday.
Unnecessary medical certificates take doctors between 1h30 and 2h per week, according to the estimates of the report by Doctor Jacques Franzoni and Pierre Albertini.
The government is seeking to reduce the administrative burden on practitioners to free up consultation time and take care of more patients, in an attempt to remedy the difficulties of patients without doctors.
