Will the Attorney General be able to suspend the controversial Alex Flórez? This says Margarita Cabello

A possible suspension against Alex Florez, senator of the Historical Pact, will be evaluated within the Attorney General’s Office. The control body announced that – as a result of the episode in which he attacked several police officers in Cartagena in a state of anger – they will monitor his evolution to determine whether or not he is removed from his functions in the Legislative.

“The Provisional suspension is a precautionary measure that depends on behavior. This measure is supported by the fact that, possibly, the repetition of the behavior is expected. Everything will depend on what we see in the procedural situation of the senator and from there we will see. Everything will depend on future behavior.”explained attorney Margarita Cabello.

The senator and former councilor of Medellín was the protagonist of a video recorded at dawn on September 2 in Cartagena. The politician insulted the uniformed police officers who arrived at the hotel where he was staying: “Murderer, murderer. Tell Colombia how you killed the innocent pelaos”, were the insults that were heard against Flórez.

The official report outlined that the events were recorded around 4:00 in the morning of that September 2 in the sector known as Bocagrande. The congressman would have tried to enter, without registering in the guest book, a sex worker.

Once Flórez’s actions became known, the Public Ministry announced the opening of a preliminary investigation against him. The rapporteur of the process is the attorney Luis Francisco Casas Farfan, who in his statement requested the records of the hotel’s security cameras, testimonies and identities of the affected uniformed officers and the information on the case that has been compiled in the media.

Flórez, with the opening of this investigation, adjusts four processes against him in the Attorney General’s Office. Margarita Cabello announced that the other three investigations – which were carried out by the Antioquia regional office – were transferred to Bogotá “because of his status as a senator.”

The senator’s defense will also have to face a criminal complaint -filed by the policemen- that He is accused of committing the crimes of libel and slander. For now, Flórez will be separated from his legislative functions until September 20, that day ends a disability that he presented to Congress for his problems with liquor.

“After several warning bells that had sounded and to which I had not paid attention, today I want to admit to all of you that I have problems with liquor,” the senator had pointed out.
