The world number 1 Every Swiatek advanced into the 2nd round of Wimbledon at breakneck speed. The Pole won against the Chinese Lin Zhu in 2 sets 6:1, 6:3. After a one-sided start, the outsider got a break in the second round. But because Swiatek took care of the service for her three times, this handling was also a clear matter.
The American Jessica Pegula meanwhile struggled to a three-set victory over compatriot Lauren Davis. After 2:19 hours, the world number 4 used its 4th match point. Especially in the 2nd round she had difficulties. Davis got the 1:14 hour set in the tie-break after Pegula had still dominated her opponent in the first round. In the 3rd set, the favorite managed the decisive break at a score of 4:3.
For the American Coco Gauff the tournament in Wimbledon has already ended. The 19-year-old lost in the first round to her compatriot Sofia Kenin in 3 sets. After losing the starting set, the favorite fought back, but in the 3rd set she had to be broken twice. Gauff is eliminated for the first time in the 1st round of her 4th participation in London, while Kenin also reaches the 2nd round for the 4th time in her 4th participation – she has never gotten any further.
Caroline Garcia secured a ticket for the 2nd round. The French won in two sets 6:4, 6:3 against the American Katie Volynets. Both times, a break in favor of the favorite made the difference. In the second round, Volynets certainly had chances to equalize the set. She twice took service from Garcia. But because the world number 5 got 3 breaks, the Wimbledon audience was denied a 3rd round.
