Wimbledon: Unbelievable! Hubert Hurkacz comes back after 6: 7, 4: 6, 3: 5, 0:40 – and still loses

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was only one point away from the second round of Wimbledon in the third set. With a score of 7: 6 (7: 4), 6: 4, 5: 3, 40: 0, from his point of view, the Spaniard served to win the match against Hubert Hurkacz, but was unable to use any of his three match balls.

Hurkacz made the break, then equalized to make it 5: 5 and had finally arrived in the Spaniard’s mind. A subsequent break in the rain on the outside courts on Church Road further complicated the situation for Davidovich Fokina.

The game could only be continued more than an hour later. Hurkacz then continued his comeback and won the third set (7:5) as well as the fourth round (6:2).

In the deciding set, too, the Pole took the serve from his opponent early on and seemed to be able to finalize the Wimbledon fairy tale, but from his point of view he let Davidovich Fokina break it at 5: 4.

Wimbledon drama! Hurkacz fails to complete mega comeback

The match tiebreak had to make the decision in this already nerve-wracking game. Here, too, Hurkacz initially took the lead, but with his back to the wall, Davidovich Fokina scored five points in a row from his point of view at a score of 4:7.

After 3:34 hours he finally used his fifth match point to 7: 6 (7: 4), 6: 4, 5: 7, 2: 6, 7: 6 (10: 8).

For Hurkacz, the early exit is a bitter disappointment. The Pole, who was seventh, was one of the favorites on Church Road. Last year, the 25-year-old reached the semi-finals. In addition, he had won the ATP tournament in Halle during Wimbledon preparation.

Wimbledon: Murray wobbles only briefly – Ruud starts confidently

French Open finalist Casper Ruud did better. The third seeded Norwegian beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets 7: 6 (7: 1), 7: 6 (11: 9), 6: 2.

In the evening, local hero and two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray made it to round two. The Scot had to give up the first set against James Duckworth, but turned the match around and won 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 4.

Another old master, on the other hand, was not allowed to take this step. Stan Wawrinka failed at 10th seeded Italian Jannik Sinner 5: 7, 6: 4, 3: 6, 2: 6.

Raducanu withstands the pressure

In the women’s category, US Open winner Emma Raducanu confidently prevailed in her opening match. The 19-year-old Brit defeated the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck 6: 4, 6: 4 and will now meet Bad Homburg winner Caroline Garcia in the second round. The French started off by beating Raducanu’s compatriot Yuriko Miyazaki 4: 6, 6: 1, 7: 6 (10: 4).
