Windows 11, File Explorer adopts a new navigation pane

After the tab support, Windows 11 File Explorer gets a new design. The changes concern the left navigation pane.

Windows 11 File Explorer is a fairly basic file manager. It blows many gaps in the face of alternative solutions. It is also one of the Windows applications which evolves very slowly. Since the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft has been trying to make it evolve to meet today’s expectations and needs.

Windows 11 and the new File Explorer

The recent build deployed on the DEV channel of the Windows Insider program precisely introduces important advances. As we have seen, one of the most striking transformations is the support for tabs. On the other we are entitled to a new left navigation pane. It’s supposed to make it easier to navigate to the most important locations on the device.

Microsoft explains that the deployment of this feature is beginning. Clearly, it will not be available for all PCs registered on the DEV channel. The firm explains

File Explorer also introduces an updated left navigation pane layout that lets you easily navigate to the folders you care about. The updated organization provides easy access to your pinned and frequently used folders (quick access) and your OneDrive cloud profiles added to Windows.

OneDrive cloud profiles reflect the user name associated with the account. Known Windows folders that are available by default in the Navigation Pane are no longer displayed under “This PC” to keep that view focused for your PC’s drives. When accessing folders synced with OneDrive, such as Documents, Pictures, etc., the address bar displays the correct path to help you clarify the situation when your folders are on cloud or local.

Being on the DEV channel of the Windows Insider program, we have no specific timetable. This novelty is part of the possible experimentation of this program. Although probably, it’s not certain that it will find its way to a “Consumer” version of Windows 11.
