Windows 11 gets update on Canary channel with support for Unicode emojis 15 and more

Windows 11 received an update on Wednesday (16) on the Canary channel. Build 25931, now available to Insiders, brings new features that initially arrived in the Dev channel builds, such as support for Unicode 15 emojis, allowing users to discover new pictures in the system’s emoji panel.

Another function that was already being tested with members of the Dev channel is the possibility of using Voice Access on the Windows lock screen. With this, users with mobility impairments can control the device even before unlocking the operating system using only voice commands.

Windows 11 Build 25931 makes a number of changes to domain controller management. While such tweaks should go unnoticed by home users, the new settings will be important to IT administrators.

Among the changes, Microsoft claims that this is the first build to drop Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) and Remote Mailslots to try to locate a domain controller on a server. According to the company, these technologies are no longer secure for current applications, so they will be disabled by default.

For legacy applications that still use the old technologies, the system will continue to offer the possibility to revert the behavior with a new group policy setting called “BlockNetBIOSDiscovery”.

Reverting to the default behavior requires enabling the EnableMailslots SMB configuration option. You can query and set the EnableMailslots setting using the “Get-SmbClientConfiguration” and “Set-SmbClientConfiguration” commands in PowerShell.

Microsoft stresses that reverting should only be done as a temporary measure, as using the old instructions might cause network malfunctions.

Other additions to the Canary version include synchronizing the lighting of devices — such as mice and keyboards — with the Windows accent color, adding new information to the File Explorer details pane, and being able to uninstall more pre-installed apps , like Cortana.
