Windows 11: how to move the “Start menu” and customize the taskbar

Windows 11 brought a big change to Microsoft’s system. In addition to removing dynamic blocks (or “live tiles“) and adopting the traditional icons, the ‘Start Menu’ is now positioned by default in the center of the screen, reminiscent of the macOS look. A change that was not welcomed by all users.

Another big change is that the taskbar is now fixed, meaning it can no longer be moved from the bottom edge.

Although some features, such as moving the taskbar, may return to the system in the future, here are some tips for customizing the look of Windows 11.

1. To bring the ‘Start Menu’ back to the left, right-click on the taskbar and select ‘Taskbar Behaviors’.

2. Now in the settings, scroll down until you find the “Taskbar behavior” section. Under “Taskbar Alignment,” choose “Left” from the drop-down menu.

Now, as usual in Windows, you will see the left-aligned “Start Menu” on the taskbar.

How to pin apps to the taskbar

To pin apps on Windows 11, you have to do it manually. For now, simply dragging and dropping an icon to the taskbar does not work. A bug that should be fixed in some update packages.

For now, for the feature to work, users need to right-click over an icon and then choose the “Pin to taskbar” option.

Similarly, you can also choose a desktop icon to add to the taskbar by right-clicking. Here, Microsoft has added an extra click to the process.

  1. First, right-click on the desired icon and go to ‘Show more options’.

2. In the next menu, click “Pin to taskbar”.

Unpinning an app from the taskbar is very easy, just right-click and select “Unpin this app”.

Finally, although you already have a method to install in advance, know that Windows 11 will be released for everyone next Tuesday (5). The good news is that most users will be able to download the operating system for free on compatible laptops and desktops.
