Windows will support compressed file formats

By the end of the week, Microsoft will release a new Windows update allowing it to support a wide range of compressed formats.

WinRar, 7-Zip or even WinZip are they all living their last hours? In any case, this is what suggests a new ticket from Microsoft on one of his blogs. As specified on the website, Microsoft intends to add, in the near future, full compatibility of its operating system with .tar, .7-zip, .rar, .gz and many other files.

Their common point? All of them are archive formats or, in other words, compressed formats. A page that is therefore turning in the treatment of compressed files, since WinRar has been offering a paid license for almost 30 years to decompress or compress digital content. Paid license which has always been the subject of running gags on the web, since the program encourages us to buy it, without actually forcing us to do so.

Available this week

According The Vergethe arrival of the file (de)compression feature is scheduled for the end of this week. “You can now get improved performance of archive functionality during compression on Windows”points Microsoft on its site, without giving more details on how it works.

The fact that Windows is adapting and finally offering native compatibility with compressed formats is not surprising. It was even time for Microsoft to offer it on its OS, especially since macOS has been offering such a feature for many years already. Windows offered native zip support which was, however, very unsophisticated.

But does the arrival of such a function sign the death warrant of WinRar and 7-zip? Hard to say for now. The most important thing will be to see if the internal Windows function is effective and what the limitations will be. The old-timers, nostalgic for the Windows XP era, could for their part remain faithful to this software and continue to use it at all costs.
