Currently, various winter viruses, including Covid, are circulating again and putting hospital structures under pressure. Since Tuesday, wearing a mask has again been compulsory at the CHUV in Lausanne, as well as at the Neuchâtel Hospital Network (RHNe).
According to the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP), at the moment, alongside other viral pathologies, Covid is the virus circulating the most. Health authorities are also observing the start of a flu epidemic.
During this time of year, hospitals are used to seeing an increase in the number of patients. But some establishments report that the situation is particularly tense at the moment.
Surgical operations postponed
The pediatric units of the Friborg hospital (HFR) and the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) had to make some transfers. Valeria Rincon-Cimorelli, head of the pediatric clinic at HUG, is reassuring: “If a child needs to be hospitalized, we will find a place or at worst, we will transfer them to another hospital,” she says. .
The RHNe has decided to postpone several surgical interventions, in particular because of a lack of beds, because several patients require isolation. “During this winter period, it is a situation that we often observe (…) but this year, we are still dealing with a conjunction of the presence of viruses”, explains Wednesday in La Matinale Muriel Desaulles president of the RHNe Board of Directors. She also specifies that, compared to last year, there are more cases.

The return of masks
Wearing a mask is also making a comeback. Two weeks ago, the Bienne Hospital Center reintroduced it. At the CHUV and RHNe, in the care areas, all visitors and patients must also wear it. From Thursday, HUG will take similar measures.
On the other hand, in Riviera-Chablais, Valais and Jura hospitals, wearing a mask is not systematic, but the situation is closely monitored there.
