ARLINGTON, Texas, USA (AP) — César Huerta took advantage of his first opportunity with the senior team and scored a goal as Mexico overcame a two-score deficit to a 2-2 draw against Australia on Saturday in a game friendly.

Harry Souttar opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Martín Boyle converted a penalty in the 63rd minute to put the Australians ahead, but Raúl Jiménez converted a penalty in the 69th minute and Huerta scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute.

“Chino” Huerta, 23, made his debut with the senior team and scored after coming on as a substitute for the Mexicans who played their first game with Jaime Lozano as their definitive coach.

Lozano, who led the Mexicans in the Gold Cup, removed the interim tag and will seek his first victory as a permanent coach next Tuesday against Uzbekistan, in Atlanta.

Souttar, who plays for Leicester City, opened the scoring in the 16th with a header that entered goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa’s right post.

Mexico could have tied the score in the 54th after a penalty on Luis Romo, but Santiago Giménez charged from the 11th minute and crashed his shot into a post when goalkeeper Mathew Ryan was defeated.

Boyle did not waste the opportunity by taking a penalty in the center of the goal to make it 2-0 for the Australians at the start of the second half.

The Mexicans cut the deficit in the same way after a foul inside the area on Uriel Antuna and Jiménez hit the Australian goalkeeper’s left post.

In the final minutes Mexico was better and reflected it when Huerta entered the area from the left and scored with a powerful shot that left goalkeeper Ryan with no chance.
