With one movement of the portafilter – the holder for the coffee – the coffee grinds, mashes and brews Philips Baristina automatically your espresso. No settings are required and you are free to choose your coffee beans. The machine automatically grinds the beans to the perfect size. “The 16 bar pressure pump releases the full flavor from your beans,” the company says.

Compact and quiet

When your coffee is ready, pop out the puck and discard the coffee grounds. You just need to rinse the portafilter or wipe it with a cloth. And with the accompanying milk frother, the Baristina can whip up hot or cold milk in just a few seconds.

The Baristina is somewhere between espresso machines and capsule machines. It is smaller and quieter than normal espresso machines and is also easier to clean. The Baristina is compact: 34.5 cm high, 38 cm long and 18 cm wide. The device is available in white or black, and you can choose from seven colors for the portafilter.

First in France, later in the Netherlands

At a price of 299.99 euros, the Philips Baristina is cheaper than a fully automatic espresso machine and more expensive than the most expensive capsule machines. You have to buy the milk frother separately for 89.99 euros.

The device was launched in France this week, but cannot currently be ordered in the Netherlands. The Dutch introduction will not follow until later this year.

Philips? No, Versuni

The Baristina was developed by Versuni, that is the name of the branch of Philips that was taken over by the investment company Hillhouse Capital in 2021. That company pays an annual amount to Philips to be allowed to put the brand name on its coffee makers, air fryers and vacuum cleaners.

According to the company, the new coffee machine makes “hassle-free, barista-quality espresso accessible in every home.” Marloes Laan, CMO of Versuni: “Philips Baristina is here to shake up the coffee world.”

The manufacturer also says that you can save money by using coffee beans. If you drink three cups of espresso a day, you calculate that you will save more than 300 euros using beans compared to using Nespresso capsules.
