WNBA Apologizes After Fans Told to Cover ‘XX-XY’ and Pro-Trans Shirts

Atlanta Dream Arena Security Intervenes Over Fan Apparel

An arena security incident at a Sunday game between the Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever thrust the WNBA back into a national culture war, after arena personnel pressured a mother and daughter to cover up shirts bearing the text “XX-XY.” Kasey Thomason and her 17-year-old daughter Annie attended the matchup to support Fever guard Sophie Cunningham and her public positions on women’s sports. The incident marks the second time in weeks that fan expression regarding transgender athletes has drawn direct intervention from league security.

The Thomasons stated they remained in their seats without incident for the majority of the game. By the fourth quarter, however, they noticed several Atlanta Dream supporters wearing pro-transgender apparel looking in their direction. According to the Thomasons, the opposing fans grew visibly agitated as the game neared its conclusion, particularly when Chicago Sky player Angel Reese missed a potential game-winning layup in the final seconds of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

Ultimatum Delivered in Overtime

With roughly two minutes remaining in overtime, a man wearing a tan suit approached Kasey and Annie and attempted to move them away from their seats for a private discussion. Annie recounted refusing to leave the row so that nearby spectators could hear the exchange. According to the Thomasons, the security representative stated that someone in the arena found the shirts offensive and gave them an ultimatum: put on provided Atlanta Dream “Wellness & Health Night” shirts or leave the building.

Kasey stated she believed the initial complaint originated from a female spectator wearing a “Protect Trans Kids” shirt who appeared familiar with regular Dream personnel and supporters. Fox News Digital later learned that WNBA security also instructed a person wearing a “Protect Trans Kids” shirt to cover up right before security approached the Thomasons. Kasey and Annie noted that the pro-trans fan should have retained the right to display her views, maintaining that neither message constituted hate speech.

Forced Compliance and Spectator Reaction

To watch the conclusion of the overtime period—which the Fever ultimately won 95-91—the Thomasons complied and put on the Dream shirts. Annie reported that after they covered their apparel, a friend of the pro-trans fan turned around and addressed her to acknowledge the change, which the Thomasons viewed as an intentional gesture regarding the suppression of their message.

Nearby spectators expressed surprise at the intervention. Annie pointed to a married couple sitting directly behind them, noting that the female spectator questioned whether her husband should also have to cover a shirt referencing religious themes if the league was enforcing dress codes.

League Admits Mistake as Pattern Emerges

The WNBA acknowledged Monday that its personnel mishandled the situation, issuing a statement that read, “This should not have happened.” The Atlanta Dream organization stated that its own employees were not involved in the decision and placed full responsibility on league security.

The episode follows a prior confrontation at a Fever-Seattle Storm game, where two teenage Cunningham supporters wearing XX-XY Athletics apparel reported being berated by pro-trans fans and a Storm minority owner. In that instance, the WNBA fined and suspended co-owner Celeste Keaton for five home games. Unlike the Seattle incident, where only one side faced repercussions, security in Atlanta attempted to suppress messages from both factions.

Upcoming Demonstrations Expected

Despite their opposition to transgender participation in women’s sports, Kasey and Annie asserted that opposing fans deserved the same protections. “They should not have had to cover their shirt up,” the Thomasons said regarding the pro-transgender supporters. “Everyone can have their own opinion.”

The confrontation may prompt further demonstrations at upcoming games. Kasey indicated that XX-XY Athletics founder Jennifer Sey was discussing organizing supporters to wear the brand’s gear at Saturday’s matchup between the Fever and the New York Liberty.
