The New York Liberty, second in the WNBA regular season, won at home against the Washington Mystics (90-75) on Friday in Game 1 of the first round of the play-offs. Marine Johannès, the French player from New York, however, played little, contenting herself with five minutes (0/3 on the shoot and an assist).

The Atlanta Dream, Iliana Rupert’s team, fifth in the regular season, lost to the Dallas Wings (94-82). Rupert did not come into play. New York and Atlanta will play again on Monday. In each series, the first team to two victories will qualify for the semi-finals.

In the other play-off matches, the Connecticut Sun and the Las Vegas Aces (outgoing champions) won their first match against the Minnesota Lynx and the Chicago Sky respectively.
