Woman almost dies from vaping: “It seems harmless

Amanda Stelzer, a 34-year-old woman from Ohio, United States, almost lost her life after being diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome, caused by the continuous use of electronic cigarettes.

Amanda started vaping in 2015. She smokes one ampoule of e-cigarette liquid a day, the equivalent of 50 cigarettes.

In 2019, the woman went to the emergency room after suffering from breathing problems and, the next day, was admitted. She spent about three weeks on a ventilator for the syndrome.

wet lung

Respiratory distress syndrome, also known as wet lung, occurs due to the accumulation of fluid in the lung alveoli. Because of the fluid, the patient cannot fill the lung with air, which results in low oxygenation of the body and can, in the most serious cases, lead to organ failure.

After being discharged from the hospital, Amanda was unable to work, be around other smokers, or visit friends and family for six months. The precautions were for her to fully recover the health of her lungs. “It seems harmless, but it is not! You never know what could happen,” she said in an interview with the newspaper. Daily Mail.

In addition, she was instructed to use nicotine lozenges to cope with withdrawal attacks. Today, Amanda suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to the experience, but luckily her health is fine.

“It was weird having to disinfect everything and asking people not to vape or smoke around me anymore. I even lost two friends because they refused. I just don’t want anyone else to go through what I went through,” she comments.
