Beijing: Woman dies of H3N8 bird flu in China The World Health Organization said it was the world’s first death from the virus. A 56-year-old woman from the southern province of Guangdong died after contracting the H3N8 strain of avian influenza.

They were admitted to the hospital on February 22. From March 3, the woman was suffering from severe pneumonia and died on March 16. It is believed that they may have got the infection from the poultry market. The DBU said that the patient had multiple symptoms and it was found that they had contact with the poultry farm.

A sample collected from the market they visited before becoming ill was found to be positive for influenza A(H3). No one else who had contact with the woman had any symptoms, WHO said. The assessment is that the virus has little ability to spread from person to person and therefore the risk of infecting others is low.

H3N8 was first confirmed in humans in April 2022. This was also in China. This disease, which is common in birds, is rarely reported in humans.
