According to several international studies, women are the greatest donors of organs in their lifetime. Far, very far, ahead of men. But they also receive fewer organs when they need them. And this is due to sexism.
Another area where gender inequality is widely felt. But this time it’s a matter of life or death. According to several studies carried out in various countries of the world, and of which the magazine Elle echoes, women are by far the ones who give the most organs in the world. But they are also the ones who receive the least when they need it. In India, a large-scale study was analyzed by the journal Times of India. In the country, 90% of living donations between spouses are made by the woman to her husband. When it comes to saving her child by donating an organ, it is also the woman, in 70% of cases, who goes to the operating table. It is therefore obviously a question of donations during his lifetime, of organs such as the liver or the kidney. The Indians believe they have found an interesting explanation for this disparity.
A sexist vision of society
The women are pushed by both family and society patriarchal to donate their organs. Even when the man is also compatible for a donation, he lets the women around him take care of it. In the popular mind, in India at any rate, a donation can affect the health of the donor and prevent him from to work, a role reserved for men. If women refuse to give, they are ostracized and sometimes even refused to live in the family home.
The role of a mother
But India is far from the only country where these gender dynamics are at work. In France, 62% of kidney donations between 2013 and 2017 were made by women. But only 34% of them received a kidney from a donor. As for bone marrow donation, for which you have to register in a register before you are called, one day, in case of need, there are only 35% of men. Still, their bone marrow, which does not contain pregnancy-related antibodies, is valuable. And it is most certainly this ability to give life which anchored in the collective mind the idea that women should give more of their organs. If they give birth, they must be able to save, too.
