Womens Basketball Game Preview: NIU vs. Western Illinois

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team continues its season-opening three-game road swing Sunday followingnoon with a 1 p.m. game at Western Illinois.

Sunday’s game between the Huskies and Leathernecks will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as locally on WDKB 94-9 FM and the NIU Huskies and Varsity Network Apps.

NIU (0-1) opened the season Thursday followingnoon at Arkansas State. The Huskies rallied from a nine-point deficit in the second quarter to take a 33-31 halftime lead. The Red Wolves started the third quarter on a 10-0 to take a 41-33 lead and shot 71 percent from the field in the quarter to go up 58-47, going on to win 75-62.

The Huskies outrebounded the Red Wolves 39-38, turning 14 offensive rebounds into 18 second chance points. NIU also assisted on 15 of 23 made baskets. Jayden Marable (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) led all players with six assists, adding 10 points and six rebounds.

Redshirt-senior guard Grace Hunter (Monroeville, Ind./Bellmont) led NIU with 19 points, tying a career-high set at Milwaukee on Dec. 5, 2019. She also tied career-highs with four assists and five three-pointers. Hunter is one of two players in the Mid-American Conference to make five threes in a game in the first week of the season.

Senior forward Brooke Stonebraker (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles) posted her first career double-double in her first career start on Thursday. Stonebraker had career-highs of 11 points and 14 rebounds in 36 minutes. Her 14 rebounds are the second-most by a MAC player to start the year. Six of her 14 boards came off the offensive glass.

Western Illinois is 1-1 on the year following a 74-52 loss at Wisconsin on Thursday night. Freshman guard Raegan McCowan led the Leathernecks with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Addi Brownfield added 12 points. The Leathernecks went 10-20 a year ago and was picked to finish 10th in its first year in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Huskies wrap up their three-game road trip at Southern Indiana on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
