Women’s Basketball World Cup: the United States first qualified

Sydney (AFP) – The United States, three-time defending champions and big favorites to succeed them, won the clash of Pool A once morest China (77-53) and were the first to validate their ticket to the quarter-finals of the Women’s Basketball World Cup, Saturday in Sydney.

The Americans, who have three wins in as many matches, sped up late in the first period to secure a relatively easy win, although the Chinese came back to within nine lengths in the final two minutes.

Coach Cheryl Reeve gave playing time to her three players who had not yet stepped on the court following playing in the WNBA final on Sunday – the North American championship – including A’ja Wilson. The star inside had a successful debut in the competition, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
