Women’s Employment in Ireland: 82.1% Rise Since 2000 | CSO Data

by

The number of women employed in Ireland has risen by 82.1% since 2000, according to data released this week by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The figures, reported by RTE, demonstrate a significant increase in female participation in the Irish labor market over the past two decades.

The CSO data indicates a substantial shift in the employment landscape for women. Whereas the precise number of women entering the workforce was not detailed in the initial release, the 82.1% increase signifies a considerable expansion of opportunities and participation. This growth is also reflected in reporting from the Irish Examiner, which noted an 80% increase in the number of women working in Ireland since 2000.

The rise in female employment coincides with broader economic trends in Ireland, though a direct causal link was not established in the CSO’s reporting. The increase in employment opportunities for women may also be linked to evolving societal norms and increased access to education and training.

Recent data also shows a high rate of employment among asylum seekers arriving in Ireland. According to the Irish Mirror, three-quarters of asylum seekers who arrived in 2022 are now employed, based on CSO data. This figure highlights the integration of fresh arrivals into the Irish workforce.

Outside of Ireland, initiatives aimed at empowering women through skills development are also underway. FundsforNGOs reported on two such projects: “LEAP for Her,” a lifelong empowerment program for rural women in Albania through skills and inclusion, and a vocational training program for the tourism sector in Zanzibar, Tanzania. These international efforts underscore a global focus on increasing female participation in the workforce.
