The UNCG women’s golf team is gearing up for the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, hosted by Mercer University at the stunning Great Waters course in Greensboro, Georgia. This prestigious tournament, taking place from Friday to Sunday, will be the Spartans’ second outing of the spring season.
Building on Fall Success
Coming off a strong fall season, the Spartans are looking to continue their momentum. They achieved remarkable results in four out of their five fall tournaments, including a runner-up finish at their own UNCG Collegiate tournament.Senior Ava Romfo shone brightly at the UNCG Collegiate,clinching the individual title.
Tournament Details
The Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational will be a 54-hole, three-day competition featuring 15 teams, including formidable opponents like Florida, Florida Atlantic, and UAB. Action will commence with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
Spartans Roster
The Spartans will field a strong lineup for the tournament, led by experienced players like Romfo and Kasey McIlvaine, who boasts a 73.13 stroke average, placing her fifth in the Southern Conference (SoCon). Adding to the team’s depth are promising freshmen lulu Leetham and Sophie Lauture.
Recent Tournament Performance
In their most recent event, the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate in Palm City, Florida, the Spartans finished seventh with a score of 23-over-par. Sophomore kasey McIlvaine led the team, tying for sixth place with a one-over-par score of 217.While the team didn’t secure a top finish, they showcased their resilience and consistency.

Following the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, the Spartans will travel to Puerto Rico to participate in the puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Ball State University. Coach Chandler, your team had an impressive fall season with four top-five finishes. what do you attribute this success to?
“Our success last fall can be attributed to the girls’ hard work and dedication. They’ve been committed to improving their skills and supporting each other on and off the course.Ava Romfo’s victory at our own UNCG Collegiate was a highlight, but it’s the team’s consistency that’s truly commendable.”

The Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational is up next. Tell us about this tournament and who we should keep an eye on from the Spartans.
“The Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational is a prestigious event held at the stunning Great waters course. We’re competing against some strong teams, including Florida and Florida Atlantic. I’m looking forward to seeing how our team steps up to the challenge. Kasey McIlvaine has been a consistent performer, and I expect her and ava to lead the way.Our freshmen, Lulu Leetham and Sophie Lauture, have also shown great promise and will be crucial to our success.”
Recent Performance and areas for Advancement
In your most recent outing,the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate,the Spartans finished seventh. What takeaways did you have from that tournament?
“We saw some great resilience from the team in Florida. We didn’t finish where we wanted to, but we gained valuable experience. We know we can’t dread the course when it’s tough. We need to embrace it, learn from it, and come back even stronger.”
Looking Ahead: Goals and Expectations
what are your goals for the Reynolds Lake oconee Invitational and the rest of the spring season?
“Our main goal for the invitational is to compete at a high level and adapt to the challenging course. We want to see ourselves consistently placing in the top five. As for the rest of the season, our ultimate goal is to win the Southern Conference Championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Regionals.”
Coach Chandler, if you could share one thing with your team heading into this tournament, what would it be?
“I’d remind them to stay patient and trust in their preparation. Golf is a game of ups and downs, and it’s how we respond to those that defines us. I’m confident that our team has the talent, heart, and determination to make a statement at Reynolds Lake Oconee.”

After the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational,the Spartans will travel to Puerto Rico. How will the team prepare for this international event?
“We’ll use the puerto Rico Classic as another chance to gain experience in different conditions. We’ll prepare by analyzing the course, adjusting our strategy and equipment as needed, and reminding ourselves to embrace the unique challenges that come with playing abroad.”
