The Women’s Reservation Bill, which reserves 33% seats for women in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies, was passed in the Lok Sabha today. 454 MPs voted in favor of the bill and two MPs voted against it. Voting on the bill was done by giving a slip. The bill will be introduced in the Rajya Sabha tomorrow.
This is the 128th amendment to the Constitution. The Women’s Reservation Bill introduced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also stipulates that one-third of the seats currently reserved for Scheduled Castes should be reserved for women of that category. The reservation is for 15 years after the amendment comes into force. However, there is a provision in the bill to extend this period. If the bill is passed by the Rajya Sabha as well, the bill becomes a law after the signature of the President. The bill says that reservation will be implemented after the census and redistricting. Even the date for conducting the census has not been decided yet. Due to this, the implementation of the law will be delayed.
At the same time, the House voted to reject the OBC reservation amendment. Following the Home Minister’s explanation, NK Premachandran withdrew the amendment. Asaduddin Uwaisi’s amendment proposal was also rejected by voice vote. It was suggested that there should be sub-reservation for minorities and backward classes.
