Investigators are examining a Worcestershire field near a protected nature site over claims that approximately 300 tonnes of contaminated medical waste were illegally spread using farm equipment. The Environment Agency leads the inquiry alongside local authorities and police.
Land off Mill Lane, near Wadborough in Worcestershire, has become the center of an environmental investigation involving multiple regulatory bodies and law enforcement. The site in question borders Great Blaythorn Meadow, a location designated by Natural England as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Natural England protects the meadow specifically for its biological interest, prioritizing the preservation of rare lowland meadow and grassland habitats.
Agricultural Equipment Allegedly Used for Dumping
According to an anonymous local resident, the dumping operation involved unconventional machinery. The source told the BBC that a muck spreader, which is normally used to distribute farmyard manure, was utilized to distribute the material across the field. Photographs taken at the location show small scraps of metal and plastic scattered across the investigated land.
The resident estimated that approximately 300 tonnes of contaminated waste has been spread on the field, raising alarm due to its proximity to the protected meadow. While the Environment Agency confirmed it is investigating the site, officials have not yet officially confirmed the exact nature of the waste or the precise total tonnage dumped.
Multi-Agency Response and Enforcement Priorities
The Environment Agency is spearheading the inquiry alongside West Mercia Police, Wychavon District Council, and Worcestershire County Council. The case marks the third location in Worcestershire flagged for illegal waste dumping, following prior investigations at Stone Arrow Farm in Peopleton and Haselor Lane in Evesham.
An Environment Agency spokesperson stated that waste crime scars communities and the environment and that, in line with their 10-point plan, they were acting quickly to tackle illegal activity.
