In the Netherlands, almost 10 million people follow professional football, the clubs and the players. A visit to a stadium is the highlight of their football experience. Unfortunately, this is sometimes ruined by a small group. We must protect football and all true football fans against such misconduct by organizing football in a hospitable and safe manner. Last Friday, PVV MP Max Aardema visited the Netherlands-Scotland match to experience this and exchange ideas.

During the visit, Member of Parliament Aardema spoke with various safety professionals, who were busy behind the scenes to ensure that the competition was hospitable and safe. The visit also included a tour of the command room and the mobility center.

More control over incidents

In the 2022/’23 season, the number of disorders and incidents in professional football was below that of the previous season. The number of incidents is still well above the number before corona, but these figures show that we are gaining more control over the problem. During the working visit it was discussed how we can continue that trend.

The House of Representatives plays an important role when it comes to safe football. Enabling more technology use in stadiums, rapid introduction of the digital reporting obligation and legal options to deploy stewards with the same pass in multiple stadiums were discussed during the visit.

Roadmap Hospitable and Safe Football

The KNVB, Eredivisie CV, Kitchen Champion Division, clubs, players, trainers, referees, supporters, Public Prosecution Service, police, municipalities, cabinet and ministries work intensively together so that everyone can go to football in a hospitable and safe manner. The components of this joint approach are depicted in the ‘Hospitable and Safe Football Roadmap’.
