Pole vault men: Duplantis, who else?
Armand “Mondo” Duplantis lived up to his role as favorite at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Saturday. The 23-year-old Swede was the only one to jump over 6.10 m in the pole vault and won ahead of Ernest John Obiena (PHI/6.00 m) and the two third-placed Kurtis Marschall (AUS) and Christopher Nilsen (USA/both 5.95 m) Gold. Then Duplantis, who broke the 6 meter mark for the 50th time, attempted the world record height of 6.23 m. In attempts 2 and 3, he only failed very closely.
4x100m men: Lyles remains undefeated
Noah Lyles has finally followed in Usain Bolt’s footsteps. Gold in the 100m and 200m was followed by victory in the 4x100m relay. Alongside Brandon Carnes and former 100m world champions Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley, Lyles ran a world best of the year in 37.38s. Decathlon: double victory for Canada

5000m women: Kipyegon remains unbeatable
World record holder Faith Kipyegon has also won the 5000m. The Kenyan prevailed in 14:53.88 minutes. The last lap in particular was tough at just 53 seconds. Dutch Olympic champion Sifan Hassan had to settle for silver in 14:54.11 minutes. Kipyegon, mother since 2018, had already triumphed over the 1500 m. A few weeks ago, the 29-year-old had improved the world records over the two distances within a few days.
800 m men: Gold goes to Arop after increase run
Canadian Marco Arop won his first world title in the 800 meters. The 24-year-old won in 1:44.24 minutes ahead of Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi (1:44.53) and Britain’s Ben Pattison (1:44.83). Arop started the race cautiously before snapping up competitor after competitor with an irresistible 500m acceleration and sprinting to victory.
Marathon women: Ethiopia misses the “medal sweep”
The women’s marathon was firmly in Ethiopian hands. In the morning sun in Budapest, Amane Beriso Shankule ran to gold with a time of 2:24:23. Her compatriot, the defending champion Gotytom Gebreslase, lagged behind by 11 seconds. For a long time it even looked like a triple victory for the East African country. But almost 2 kilometers before the finish line, Yalemzerf Yehualaw ran out of strength. Moroccan Fatima Gardadi benefited and picked up the bronze medal. For Yehualaw it was finally enough for 5th place. There were no Swiss women at the start.
