With Usain Bolt, we believed we had seen the greatest humanity could produce in terms of athletic performance: 9.58 in the 100m, 19.19 in the 200m. Then Erriyon Knighton arrived. On April 30, 2022, in the deserted stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he ran the 200 m in 19”49 (+1.4 m/s of favorable wind), the fourth performance of all time, behind Bolt, of course, Blake (19”26) and Michael Johnson (19”32).
