George Cohen, right-back for England’s 1966 World Cup-winning side, has died aged 83. The announcement was made on Friday by his former club, Fulham.
“Everyone at Fulham is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest players – and gentlemen – George Cohen,” the London club wrote in tribute on their website. The defender with 37 selections had played all the matches of the victorious epic of the Three Lions who had won their only world title at home.
Statue in front of Craven Cottage
Cohen spent his entire career at Fulham, playing 459 games for the Cottagers from 1956 to 1969 before a knee injury ended his career aged 29. A statue of him was unveiled outside the Craven Cottage stadium in October 2016.
After Cohen’s death, only Geoff Hurst (81), author of a hat-trick in the 1966 final, and Bobby Charlton (85) are still alive in the English starting lineup (no substitutes were allowed at the time) who won the World Cup.
