World Cup Winners’ Match Worn Jerseys: Messi, Maradona, and More

The Argentina World Cup winner’s match worn jerseys have gone under the hammer for a staggering sum.

Six jerseys that Lionel Messi wore in seven games during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were auctioned for the equivalent of 7.1 million euros. Each jersey auctioned by the famous London auction house Sotheby’s was worth an average of more than one million euros to the successful, unknown bidder.

However, the record for the most expensive sports jersey is still held by an athlete from another sport: basketball player Michael Jordan’s shirt, which he wore during the 1998 NBA finals, once changed hands for the equivalent of around 9.2 million euros.

Maradona still holds the football record

And in football there has already been a jersey that was auctioned for more money than Messi’s total of six. Of all things, Diego Armando Maradona’s jersey, which he wore for Argentina in the 1986 World Cup triumph, was worth the equivalent of 8.3 million euros to a bidder.

Inter Miami is on winter break and the Argentine is currently enjoying a little break.

However, all eyes will soon be on the pre-season clash once morest Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr. On February 1, 2024, what may be the last meeting between the two best football players of the past 20 years will take place.
