Indices and stock market conditions, oil, gold and foreign money markets on October 5, 2022

— The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed lower on Wednesday (Oct. 5) after reports that private sector jobs rose more than expected in September. This led investors to worry that the strength of the labor market could cause the Federal Reserve (Fed) to accelerate interest rates.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 30,273.87, down 42.45, or -0.14%, the S&P 500 closed at 3,783.28, down 7.65, or -0.20%, and the Nasdaq closed at 11,148.64, down 27.77, or -0.25%.

— European stock markets closed lower on Wednesday (Oct. 5), after a three-day gain, as investors regained fears about rising interest rates. After the Reserve Bank of New Zealand announced a 0.50% interest rate hike and a drop in business activity in Europe has fueled concerns about a slowdown in the economy.

The STOXX 600 index closed at 398.91, down 4.12, or -1.02%.

The WTI crude oil contract was delivered in November. It was up $1.24, or 1.4%, at $87.76 a barrel. This is the highest closing level since Sept. 14, 2022.

The Brent crude oil contract (BRENT) delivered in December. It was up $1.57, or 1.7 percent, at $93.37 a barrel. This is the highest closing level since Sept. 14, 2022.

— New York gold futures closed negative on Wednesday (Oct. 5), with the market pressured by the dollar’s appreciation. and rising US bond yields Meanwhile, investors are eyeing the release of US non-farm payroll numbers tomorrow.

The COMEX (Commodity Exchange) gold contract will be delivered in December. It was down $9.7, or 0.56%, at $1,720.8/ounce.

Silver metal contract for delivery in December It was down 55.5 cents, or 2.63 percent, at $20.544 an ounce.

Platinum contract delivered in Jan. It was down $19.1, or 2.05%, to close at $914.6/ounce.

Palladium contract delivered in December It fell $74.30, or 3.2%, at $2,255.90 an ounce.

— The US dollar strengthened against major currencies in trading at the New York Foreign Exchange on Wednesday (Oct. 5) after US Treasury yields rebounded. While investors are eyeing the release of US non-farm payrolls on Friday.

The dollar index, which measures the dollar’s movements against six major currencies in a basket of currencies, rose 0.91% to 111.0740.

The US dollar strengthened against the yen to 144.47 yen from 143.93 yen and was stronger against the Swiss franc to 0.9825 from 0.9787 francs. against the Canadian dollar, at $1.3602, from 1.3510 CAD.

The euro was lower against the dollar to $0.9895 from $1.0000, while the pound was lower to $1.1344 from $1.1479, while the Australian dollar rose to $0.6507 from $0.6498.
