Being physically active is often thought of as rigorous exercise every day of the week, for at least two hours. But the truth is that these are actions that seem simple, such as a 20-minute walk, exercising (without overdoing it) with your own weight, and even dancing.

This is important because it allows the body to enjoy good physical and mental health. According to the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute physical activity is “any movement of the body that works the muscles and requires more energy than rest. Walking, running, dancing, swimmingdo yoga and do yard work”, among others.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity is the fourth most important risk factor for premature mortality, accounting for 9% of all deaths worldwide.

In Colombia, this figure rises to 12.1%, according to data from the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Health. The WHO estimates that more than five million deaths a year could be avoided if the world population were more active.

A recent WHO report indicates that the health and economic burden of physical inactivity worldwide is and will be very high, as between 2020 and 2030, there will be almost 500 million new cases of preventable (chronic) non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which will exceed treatment costs of just over 300 billion dollars. Some of them (caused by a sedentary lifestyle) such as diabetes and hypertension.

For this reason, the commemoration every April 6 of the World Day of Physical Activity, led in Colombia by the Colombian Network of Physical Activity, (Redcolaf), by the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, with the motto ‘ Enjoy being active’, they extend an invitation to Colombians to carry out the activity that motivates them.

This with the intensity that their physical condition and state of health allows them, and the one with which they feel comfortable and pleasant, explains the endocrinologist Iván Darío Escobar, national coordinator of the mentioned organization.

For its part, Smart Fit Go, has free training available, which can be accessed through the platform, under the ‘Train for life’ campaign, because exercising mentally and physically regularly brings benefits to everyday life.

This is added to the mix of physical activity with technology, since now the health and almost all of people’s lives are related to scientific progress. Regarding this, Andrés Ávila, from Zebra Technologies, affirms that “health services should focus their digital transformation efforts to improve patient care”.
