The latest animated film by the famous Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki will open the San Sebastian Festival in Spain, on September 22, with a first screening of this work in Europe, according to what the event organizers said Thursday.

“The Boy and the Heron” is Miyazaki’s first film in 10 years and possibly the last from the 2001 “Spirited Away” director, who won the Oscar for best animated feature.

The organizers of the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Festival, which is expected between September 22 and 20 in the Spanish city, said in a statement, “This is the fourth time that the festival witnesses a screening of one of Miyazaki’s films, but it is the first time that a Japanese director’s work is included in the official list of films of the cinematic event.”

The events of the movie “The Boy and the Heron”, which was released in July in Japan and shown at the Toronto Film Festival in early September, take place during World War II in Japan, and the work deals with the story of a boy named Mahito who leaves Tokyo with his father to live in the countryside after the tragic death of his mother.

The list of official films of the San Sebastian Festival includes the film “L’il Rouge” by French director Robin Campello, and the events of this work take place during the French colonial period in Madagascar.

The festival will honor Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who will receive an honorary award, although he has not yet confirmed whether he will attend the festival due to the actors’ strike in Hollywood.
