Jan todd and the Evolution of Strength: A Story of Muscle, Mind, and breaking Barriers

Jan ToddS journey is one of remarkable strength, not only in a physical sense but also in breaking societal barriers and reshaping perceptions about women in sports and academia. Her life, chronicled in michael joseph Gross’s book “Stronger,” challenges long-held prejudices and celebrates the union of physical prowess and intellectual achievement.

The Genesis of “Stronger”: Beyond Physical Limits

Michael Joseph Gross, inspired by his own journey into whitewater kayaking and strength training, sought to explore the deeper significance of physical strength. He “wrote the book that I wanted to read,” delving into the historical biases against muscle and the surprising evolution of medicine’s understanding of weight training.

Gross discovered an “ancient prejudice against muscle, an idea that goes all the way back to ancient Rome, that the training to build mass can actually suffocate a person’s soul.” He emphasizes that this bias, “has no basis in biology” and has unfortunately persisted into modern times.

Overcoming Prejudice: An Athlete in the Academy

Todd’s husband’s experience illustrates this prejudice vividly. As Todd recounts, at the begining of one semester, her husband, a doctoral student, walked “into a philosophy class he wanted to take. And he went in and sat down in the back of the room, and of course, in his gray sweats and sweatshirt and weighing about 330 lbs., the professor actually looked at [Terry] and he said, ‘Excuse me, you must be in the wrong room.'” This anecdote highlights the pervasive stereotype that associates physical strength with a lack of intellectual capacity.

Challenging Gender Norms in Strength Training

Todd faced notable resistance and misinformation when she began lifting. She was warned that it “would make my waist bigger,” and that people “were very worried about me damaging my bones by lifting weights, which, of course, the reverse happens. It strengthens your bones.” The absurd idea that, “You could have a prolapsed uterus and then it would just fall out while you’re squatting,” reflects the profound lack of understanding and fear surrounding women’s participation in strength sports at the time.

Todd emphasizes the importance of women making their own choices about their bodies. “You have the choice to decide who you want to be as a person,” she asserts. She contrasts the encouragement a male athlete receives to gain weight for football with the cultural pressure on women to remain thin, stating that, “Culturally, we have always suggested to women that the gaining of weight is somehow a transgression because we are making a choice to make ourselves – in the eyes of men – less attractive.”

A Legacy of Strength and Scholarship

Despite a severe car accident in 2020, Todd remains a prominent figure in the world of strength and academia. As the chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas austin, and professor of women’s and gender studies, she continues to inspire and educate.

While she may no longer be “driving nails through boards with my bare hands” or able to “lift 1,000 lbs.of kids” on a table, Todd still possesses incredible strength, demonstrating her ability to bend a metal bottle cap with her fingertips. She recalls bending a bottle cap at an Arnold Britain contest, sending a photo of it to Michael Joseph Gross, joking, “Who knows, it may be the last one, we’ll have to see.'”

More Than Just Physical Prowess: A Whole Person

Gross highlights Todd’s profound impact, stating, “Jan Todd, by lifting weights, not only lifted women, she lifted her whole academic field and she lifted the athletic endeavor.” He emphasizes that “she didn’t make some grand plan to change the world and then execute that plan. She just did the difficult thing in front of her every day and kept doing it.”

Todd reflects on her journey, expressing that she has “achieved what I said I wanted to do. The work I’ve done as an academic, the research, the writing—that qualifies me now to say I have become a whole person.”
