Worth Sharing: Stories I Loved & You Might Too

Instagram users can now directly reshare public Stories to their own accounts, a feature rolled out in an update in early 2026, according to multiple reports. The change allows users to share content even if they were not originally tagged, a previous limitation of the platform’s sharing functionality.

The update addresses a long-standing user request and circumvents the demand for workarounds like screenshots, which often resulted in diminished image quality, Sendible reported in December 2025. Previously, sharing another user’s Story required a direct tag or mention from the original poster. Now, any public Story is eligible for resharing.

Instagram’s move is part of a broader strategy to encourage content circulation within the app, following similar “Repost” features implemented for Reels and feed posts, Metricool noted. The company aims to foster collaboration and amplify content without requiring users to create entirely original material for every post. According to Sendible, Instagram engagement increases by 28% when followers interact with a mixture of user-generated content and brand messaging.

The process for resharing is straightforward: users navigate to the public Story they wish to share, tap the “Share” icon (represented by a paper airplane), and select “Add to your story.” The Story then opens within Instagram’s story editor, allowing for customization with stickers, text, or music, as outlined by both Lifewire and Outfy.

The new feature is expected to benefit both individual creators and brands, providing a streamlined method for highlighting community content and industry leaders. IGeeksBlog suggests the update will also simplify collaborations between accounts. However, the platform has limitations and rules governing reposting, and brands should be mindful of maintaining their reputation, according to Sendible.

Instagram has not yet commented on the long-term implications of the feature or potential future developments related to content sharing.
