Jil Teichmann (WTA 22) did not start his grass campaign in the best possible way. The eighth finalist of Roland-Garros fell from the outset at the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin. The left-hander lost 6-7 (2/7) 7-5 6-2 to Daria Saville (104).
Coming from qualifying, the 28-year-old Australian is sketching a return to the fore following being ranked world no. 20 under her maiden name Gavrilova in August 2017. She was able to exploit a terrible slump from her rival to force the decision.
Teichmann was indeed one game away from winning when she led 7-6 5-4 on her opponent’s serve. She unfortunately lost eight of the next nine games to see Daria Saville lead 5-1 in the deciding set. Mass was said.
