WTA: Eugenie Bouchard qualified for the 2nd round at the Guadalajara tournament

Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard scored her biggest victory in more than three years on Tuesday, beating American Kayla Day 7-5, 6-3 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Bouchard, 28, had not won a WTA 1000-caliber match since 2019 in Dubai, when the tournament alternated between the now-defunct Premier and Premier 5-Mandatory formats.

In Guadalajara, she was able to be among the 64 players present by virtue of an invitation from the organizers. Her rival on Tuesday had gone through the qualifications.

It was the third win for Bouchard, the former world No. 5, in the main draw since returning to action in Vancouver last August.

She was able to turn things around at the end of the opening set, trailing 5-4.

“It was complicated in the first set, but it only shows that in this kind of tournament, all the players are talented. I’m happy to have recovered and to be able to stay at least one more day, ”she said in a post-match interview.

In her next outing, we will see Bouchard in action once morest the 12th seed of the competition, the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.

Bouchard’s compatriots, Bianca Andreescu and Rebecca Marino, will also play on Tuesday. In their case, it will be 2nd round clashes.

Andreescu will face Czech Petra Kvitova (No. 16) following Bouchard’s match at 6 p.m., while Marino will face French Caroline Garcia (No. 6) in the evening.
