WTA Rome: Belinda Bencic beaten in the 2nd round

Belinda Bencic (WTA 14) fell in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. Seeded No. 12, the St-Galloise lost 7-6 (7/5) 6-1 to Amanda Anisimova (WTA 32).

The clay court of Foro Italico therefore still does not suit Belinda Bencic, who remained on an 8th final in Madrid. Beaten as soon as she entered the competition in both 2020 and 2021 in the Eternal City, the Olympic singles champion won only 3 matches in the final draw, in 6 appearances.

The winner of the recent Charleston tournament does not have to be ashamed of this defeat, suffered against a player who had reached the semi-finals at Roland-Garros in 2019. Amanda Anisimova (20 years old) had moreover won the last duel delivered against Belinda Bencic, in the 2nd round of the Australian Open 2022 (6-2 7-5).

The American once again dominated the debates on Wednesday. Belinda Bencic offered a good resistance in the 1st set, erasing 3 set points before giving in on the 4th. On the other hand, she could not do anything in the second set, conceding no less than 4 times her serve.
