WTA tournament in Berlin: difficult qualification for Belinda Bencic

Belinda Bencic (WTA 17) passed the 1st round of the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin. On the grass of the country’s capital, she beat the German Jule Niemeier (WTA 96) in three sets, 6-4 5-7 6-3.

It took 2h22 of a fierce fight for the Olympic champion to end up shouldering the young player from Dortmund, aged 22, like last year at the same stage of the tournament. She concluded on her opponent’s serve with a fifth break. Belinda Bencic, seeded No. 8 in Berlin, meanwhile conceded three times.

In the next round, the 25-year-old St. Gallen will face Russian Anna Kalinskaya (WTA 81). She had lost once morest her last week in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and will therefore want to take her revenge.
