Wu Jiying, the Nanjing Massacre survivor, dies at 98

Xinhua news agency A report on May 26 said Wu Jiying, a survivor of the Nanjing massacre He died at the age of 98 on Wednesday morning, bringing the total number of survivors registered with China to 56.

An initial biography of Wu Jiying states that she was sold to a family in Nanjing to become a maid at the age of 10. Oo was stabbed in the right leg by two Japanese soldiers, who survived by pretending to be dead amid the corpses of a house. Later, Ou’s real father finds her. The two then returned to their hometowns. Located about 50 kilometers from Nanjing, Wu is married and has six children.

The Nanjing Massacre was caused by Japanese troops occupying the city of Nanjing. It has slaughtered some 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers in the span of six weeks, in one of the most brutal events of World War II.

China’s supreme legislature has designated Dec. 13 as a national day of remembrance for victims of the Nanjing Massacre since 2014, and the Chinese government has compiled written statements from survivors. The text and video clips were included in the Memory of the World Register by UNESCO in 2015.
