Wyoming Facebook Group Algorithm Changes

is often accused of playing dice wiht people’s lives with unpredictable algorithms.

The precise science behind Facebook’s algorithms are kept secret, but sources say they are designed to show users more of what they want to see.

Whether by design or unintended consequence, the algorithms can drastically alter the experience for some pages and many users.

“They’re constantly changing stuff and they don’t tell you what they change and it affects your reach,” Lang said.

Wyoming Through the Lens is not the only Facebook group to see reach drop after the latest changes. Other groups have complained of similar patterns.

In one post, a person asked if others had seen a recent plunge in engagement. Of the 54 comments, most said yes, they had noticed a similar disruption.

“I manage a group of about 6,000 members and have seen a significant drop in engagement, as well. It’s frustrating!” wrote one.

“Same here. I’m one of three admins for a group of 17,000+ members. We’ve seen a massive drop. We can post something that would have been seen by at least half the members, and now it’s only a few hundred,” wrote another.

Possible Causes

lang and others have come up with theories as to why the algorithm may have changed, with no way to verify whether those suspicions are accurate. One theory is that Facebook is attempting to reduce the number of groups so that the platform can encourage more individual “friend” connections.

Another is that Facebook is attempting to push groups to pay subscription fees, therefore increasing revenue.

“It almost feels as if they are trying to kill groups unless you pay for them,” one commenter wrote.

Lang is open to any possible solutions, including paying a Facebook subscription fee if that’s what it takes.

“I’d be happy to pay a subscription fee. I don’t care because it’s important. I just want them to tell me what I need to do,” Lang said.

As of now, Lang said she has found no answers as to what she can do to improve her group’s reach.

“I feel like it’s being held hostage. I just want to know what I can do, and they won’t tell me,” Lang said.
